Salary: Master Pay Scale Point 27 ($36,740) to Master Pay Scale Point 44 ($77,675) per month
Entry Requirements: (a) (i) a 1st or 2nd class honours degree in Economics from a Hong Kong university or equivalent; or (ii) an honours degree in a subject related to Economics and a higher degree in Economics from a Hong Kong university or equivalent, and (b) attained Level 2 results in the two language papers (Use of Chinese and Use of English) in the Common Recruitment Examination. [See Notes (a) to (d) below]
Notes: (a) The results of the UC and UE papers in the CRE are classified as 'Level 2', 'Level 1' or 'Fail', with 'Level 2' being the highest. (b) Grade 'C' or above and Grade 'D' in Use of English of the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE), or equivalent, are accepted as equivalent to 'Level 2' and 'Level 1' results respectively in the UE paper of the CRE. Grade 'C' or above and Grade 'D' in Chinese Language and Culture or Chinese Language and Literature of the HKALE are accepted as equivalent to 'Level 2' and 'Level 1' results respectively in the UC paper of the CRE. (c) Applicants with an overall band of 6.5 or above with no subtest score below band 6 obtained in the same sitting in the Academic Module of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) within the two-year validity period of the test are considered as having met the English language proficiency requirement of the Economist post. The IELTS test results must be valid on the starting day of the application period, i.e. 11 December 2009. (d) For the purpose of heightening public awareness of the Basic Law (BL) and promoting a culture of learning of the BL in the community, assessment of BL knowledge will be included in the recruitment for all civil service jobs. Results of the BL test for degree/professional grades will be one of the considerations to assess the suitability of a candidate but will not affect his/her eligibility for applying for civil service jobs. As a general principle, the main consideration for suitability for appointment remains a candidate's qualifications, experience and calibre.
Duties: An Economist is mainly responsible for undertaking economic analysis and research on various aspects of the Hong Kong economy, such as Hong Kong’s economic growth and developments at both the macro and micro levels.
Terms of Appointment: New recruits will be appointed on civil service probationary terms for three years. Upon passage of probation bar, the officer may be appointed on a 3-year agreement prior to consideration for appointment on the prevailing permanent terms.

The said form can also be downloaded from the Civil Service Bureau's web site (http://www.csb.gov.hk). Completed forms should reach the above enquiry address on or before the closing date for application (according to postmark if applicable). On-line application can also be made through the Civil Service Bureau's web site (http://www.csb.gov.hk). Applications received after the stated closing date will not be considered. Applications submitted by fax or e-mail or not made in the prescribed form or which are incomplete will not be accepted. Applicants must attach copies of their official transcripts of studies and certificates to their application forms, otherwise their applications will not be considered. For on-line applicants, copies of their official transcripts of studies and certificates must be submitted to the above enquiry address by post on or before the closing date for application, otherwise the application will not be considered. They should quote the online application number on the envelope and every page of the copies of the documents. Do not send any originals of transcripts/certificates. Applicants may be required to attend selection interview(s) and/or written test. Candidates who are selected for interview and/or written test will normally receive an invitation in about six to eight weeks from the closing date for application. Those who are not invited for interview and/or written test may assume that their applications are unsuccessful.
